Some disinfectants don’t kill germs not because they’re useless, but because of how, where, or when they’re used. Here are the main reasons 👇
1. WRONG CONCENTRATION (too weak)
Many disinfectants must be diluted correctly.
If it’s over-diluted, it won’t be strong enough to kill germs. This is very common with liquid disinfectants mixed with too much water.
2. NOT ENOUGH CONTACT TIME
Disinfectants don’t work instantly.
Most need 5–10 minutes or more sitting on the surface. Wiping immediately after spraying reduces effectiveness.
3. DIRTY SURFACES BLOCK ACTION
Germs hide under dirt, grease, or organic matter. If a surface isn’t cleaned first, the disinfectant may not reach the germs.
👉 Clean first, then disinfect.
4. NOT ALL DISINFECTANTS KILL ALL GERMS
Some disinfectants:
Kill bacteria but not viruses or fungi
Kill enveloped viruses but not non-enveloped viruses
Don’t kill spores at all
So a disinfectant may work on some germs, not all.
5. EXPIRED OR POORLY STORED PRODUCTS:
Heat, sunlight, or long storage can reduce strength. Expired disinfectants often lose killing power.
6. LOW-QUALITY OR FAKE PRODUCTS:
Unfortunately, some products:
Are poorly formulated
Contain insufficient active ingredients
Are counterfeit
These may smell nice but don’t truly disinfect.
7. WRONG SURFACE TYPE:
Some disinfectants don’t work well on:
Porous surfaces (cloth, wood)
Very rough or oily surfaces
