Three acronyms that can end a commercial cleaning pitch before it even starts, and most cleaning businesses have never had to think about them until a client asks.
Here`s what usually happens. You spot a tender for an office block or a school. You put a number together, you feel good about it, you send it across. Then the client replies asking for your RAMS, your COSHH assessment, and your PPE policy. And you have nothing to send them.
That`s not a cleaning problem. That`s a paperwork problem. But in commercial cleaning, paperwork is the pitch.
So what are they actually?
RAMS stands for Risk Assessment and Method Statement. It`s a document that explains how your team works safely on a specific site — what the risks are and how you`re managing them. Commercial clients use it to decide whether you`re a safe pair of hands before they let you in the building.
COSHH — Control of Substances Hazardous to Health — covers the chemicals your team uses. Bleach, degreasers, disinfectants. If your team touches them, you`re legally required to have a COSHH assessment. Not optional. Not a nice-to-have. Required.
PPE is your Personal Protective Equipment policy. Gloves, goggles, masks — documented and assigned to the right tasks. It tells clients your team is protected and that you`re running things properly.
